The Tough Stuff offers workshops, online programmes and resources for parents to help you deal with the tough conversations regarding, puberty, sexuality and mental health.

Our workshops for parents include:

Tough Conversations – Puberty and Sexuality Year 1-8

2 Hours

On completion of this workshop you will:

  • Know what your child needs to know at what age
  • Feel confident having open and honest conversations with your child about puberty and sexuality, in a way that works for your family.
  • Understand what is taught at school so you can continue this learning at home
  • Have an awareness of sexual abuse and how to prevent sexual harm happening to your children, including online grooming.

Tough Conversations – Puberty and Sexuality Year 9-13

2 Hours

On completion of this workshop you will:

  • Know what topics are important to discuss for their development into healthy adults
  • Understand what they are learning at school in regard to this and why
  • What to discuss with your teenager to ensure they have healthy relationships
  • Consent and sex – what your teenager needs to know
  • Online risks and how to overcome them
  • Sexual violence prevention

Supporting Mental Health Year 1-8

2 Hours

On completion of this workshop you will:

  • Understand mental health, mental distress and anxiety
  • Know how to support your child through these times
  • Have the knowledge of what they need to assist in preventing mental distress as they develop into adults.
  • Feel confident in having a conversation with your child about mental distress and know where to go for more support

Supporting Mental Health Year 9-13

2 Hours

On completion of this workshop you will:

  • Understand mental health and mental distress – with a focus on depression, anxiety and suicide.
  • Know how to support your child if they are experiencing mental distress
  • Have the knowledge to assist in preventing mental distress over their lifetime
  • Feel confident having a conversation with your child about mental distress and know where to go for more support

About Kylie Ryan – Parent helper

Kylie Ryan has a clinical background in mental health social work and over 20 years’ experience in training and facilitation. Her courses arm parents with the skills and knowledge to discuss the tough issues: how babies are made, puberty, bullying, sexuality, relationships, friendships, pornography, sexual abuse and sexual violence, drugs, alcohol, anxiety, depression, and suicide. She approaches mental health and sexual health in a fun, simple way that people can use in everyday life.
